Funerals

“God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes.”

Book of Revelation 21:3

Firstly, may God be with you and your family as you grieve the loss of someone you love. We understand that arranging a funeral can be both painful and overwhelming, and we are here to support you in any way we can.

Anyone can have a Church in Wales funeral, whether they attended church regularly or not. Together, we will give thanks for the unique life of the person who has died, and we will support you, your family and friends with care, prayer and understanding before, during and after the funeral. Our priest is also available to offer pastoral and spiritual support as you begin to navigate the journey of grief.

A funeral can take place in church, at a crematorium, at a cemetery, or at a woodland or green burial site. Wherever the service is held, the priest will meet with you beforehand to listen as you share memories of your loved one and to help plan a service that reflects their life and personality.

Each funeral is unique. You are welcome to include favourite hymns, music, readings or personal tributes that celebrate the life of the person you knew and loved. Family members, friends or the priest may share memories as part of the service, helping to tell the story of a life that mattered deeply to those around them.

Alongside these personal reflections, the service includes prayers, readings from the Bible and words of comfort and hope. As Christians, we believe that death is not the end, and that God’s love is stronger even than death. There is also time for quiet reflection, music or silence, allowing everyone present an opportunity to remember and give thanks.

Towards the end of the service, the priest will commend your loved one into God’s care using prayers that have brought comfort to Christians for generations. This is often a particularly emotional moment as family and friends say their final farewell. The service concludes with a blessing and a final piece of music as mourners leave.

While the funeral marks an important moment of farewell, our support does not end there. Grief can continue long after the service has finished, and anniversaries, birthdays and occasions such as Christmas can be especially difficult. St Michael and All Angels will always be a place where you can remember your loved one, find peace and reflection, and draw strength from the prayers and support of the church community.
