Baptism marks the beginning of an exciting journey of faith with God, supported by parents, godparents, family, friends and the Church. It is a celebration of God’s love for your child and their welcome into the family of the Christian faith.
There are several special moments within the baptism service. It begins with prayers for your child and for all those who will help and encourage them as they grow. Parents and godparents make important promises to support the child in their faith and to help them learn about the Christian life.
During the service, the priest marks the sign of the cross on the child’s forehead with blessed oil, reminding us that they belong to Christ. Water is then poured over the child’s head at the font, following a tradition that goes back to the earliest days of Christianity. The congregation joins in welcoming the newly baptised child and promises to support them in their journey of faith.
Towards the end of the service, a candle is presented as a symbol of the light of Christ, with the words: “Shine as a light in the world to the glory of God the Father.”
Baptism is one of the most important sacraments of the Christian faith. It celebrates the gift of new life, the love of family and community, and our hope for the future. Through baptism, we give thanks for God’s love, pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and welcome your child into the worldwide family of the Church.

Choosing godparents
Godparents play a very special role in a child’s life. During the baptism service, they promise to pray for your child, encourage them in the Christian faith and support them as they grow. Because of these promises, godparents should themselves be baptised Christians.
Preparing for the big day
Before the baptism, the priest will invite you to meet and talk about what happens during the service and what baptism means. This is an opportunity to ask questions, discuss any practical arrangements and prepare for the day with confidence.
A celebration with the church family
Baptisms can take place at different times, but if your child’s baptism is held during a Sunday service, the wider church family will be present to share in the celebration. Alongside your family and friends, they will join in welcoming your child and promising their prayers and support for the journey ahead.
